100 FLOWERS “DIZZY MISS LIZZY” (1983)

originally recorded by Larry Williams (1958)
cover version available on 100 Flowers (Happy Squid LP, 1983)
100 Flowers are the Urinals. They are also Chairs of Perception.
“Dizzy Miss Lizzy” was covered famously by Little Richard and The Beatles. Then it was butchered (in the best way possible) by Flying Lizards and our featured band. I really really love the energy of this one, and John Talley-Jones’ frenzied vocals.
100 Flowers/Urinals/COP are a Southern Californian punk band that’s been around since the late 70s. The Urinals very recently toured outside of California, where they still play regularly—the Baltimore stop I missed because of rather unfortunate events. Peers to the Minutemen, Black Flag, and the Go-Gos. Interestingly enough, their songs have been covered by folks such as the aforementioned Minutemen (“Ack Ack Ack”), Yo La Tengo (“Surfing With the Shah”, “Black Hole”), The Gun Club (“Black Hole”), Butthole Surfers, and most recently by Pitchfork darlings, No Age.
