PINK SECTION “MIDSUMMER NY” (1980)

originally recorded by Yoko Ono (Fly and “Mrs. Lennon” b/w “Midsummer NY”, 1971)
cover version appears on Pink Section (Modern 12”, 1980)

WHY HELLO THERE.

I almost forgot I had this blog.

Since the last time I posted, much has changed, chief among which being my zip code! I am now back in the slimy pits of despair known as New Jersey. Fear not, dear reader—I am close enough to New York that I forget all about that small detail!

In honor of my move, and many other things, I bring you Pink Section’s “Midsummer New York”, a manic cover of Yoko Ono’s honkytonking slow burner from 1971. It’s a real toss up between Yoko’s electronic drum thuds and dramatic “aching”s and Judy G’s Ono-esque, new wave weirdo banshee warble. Pink Section, aside from inspiring the name of a space I ran in Chicago back in 2001, were a San Francisco based act, peers to Tuxedomoon and others. The quartet released one 45, “Shopping” b/w “Tour of China” and a self-titled 12”. The ladies of Pink Section, Judy Gittelsohn and Carol Detweiler went on to form an equally charming, albeit short-lived outfit, The Inflatable Boy Clams. The first 15 seconds of IBC’s melancholic “Boystown” was my outgoing voice mail message for nearly a year.

At any rate, enjoy!
