CELIA & THE MUTATIONS “MONY MONY” (1977)

Originally recorded by Tommy James & the Shondells (1968)
Cover version available on “Mony Mony” b/w “Mean to Me” (United Artists Records 45, 1977)
Everybody knows Billy Idol’s rave-up cover of this song. Here’s an earlier take by Celia & the Mutations, a side project of SECOND WAVE favorites, The Stranglers. The B-side was later re-recorded by the Stranglers, and featured only on the cassette for Black and White (1978) before its CD reissue in 1998.
Besides this single, a follow-up (“You Better Believe Me” b/w “Round and Round”, 1977), and a vocal credit on the 1975 Brian Eno-produced Ensemble Pieces (Christopher Hobbs/John Adams/Gavin Bryars), there hasn’t been much else heard from Celia Golin.
