GENERAL STRIKE “WE TRAVEL THE SPACEWAYS” (1984)

originally recorded by Sun Ra & his Myth-Science Arkestra (We Travel the Spaceways, 1956)

cover version available on Danger in Paradise (Touch, 1984 and Piano reissue, 1996)

Strange yet pleasant record produced, released, and recorded in part by David Cunningham of Flying Lizards fame. Reminiscent of some of the dubbed out instrumentals on FL’s debut (1979). Stay tuned—there will be a series of Flying Lizards covers featured here, as they’ve done some quite remarkable ones.  The other members of General Strike, David Toop and Steve Beresford, accomplished composers in their own right, were also a part of oddball supergroup The 49 Americans (with folks from The Slits and SW favorites, The Door and the Window). In its nascency, Cunningham’s Piano label also released This Heat’s self-titled record and Health & Efficiency (1979 and 1980, respectively). This cover of Sun Ra is pretty faithful to the original, though somehow even more spaced out.
